I am watching the extraordinary spectacle of the American presidential nomination with nothing less than astonishment. Here we are in 2012, beset with crises on every front – banking crises, terrorist crises, sovereign-debt crises, climate-change crises, energy crises, food crises, ecological crises – during very year the Mayans warned would mark cataclysmic change, and the best we can come up with as candidates for US President is a rogue’s gallery of business-as-usual opportunists, corporate flunkies and scaredy cats.
Men of the people
On the Republican side, we have multi-millionaire Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, trying to look like a man of the people, the half of all Americans who say they are now struggling on basic salaries to make ends meet, and promising to address the populist fury over America’s vast wealth inequality, but only in ‘quiet rooms.’
Romney has reason to keep things pretty quiet; he himself pays virtually no taxes because all of his holdings are off-shore. When asked about the fact that he only pays 15 per cent tax, he retorted that he ‘doesn’t make much’ in wages, only a ‘couple of extra bucks’ (as in $374,000 extra for his speaking engagements).
Then we have his chief opponent former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, champion of the Religious Right, who stands for ‘family values’ and who you may remember, was the chief prosecutor and witchhunter of former President Bill Clinton, demanding his impeachment over the Monica Lewinsky affair. It now turns out that around that time, Newt had his own mistress, first during his first marriage (a mistress who subsequently became Mrs. Gingrich No 2). When he tired of No 2, Gingrich asked her if she wouldn’t mind sharing him so he could have an open marriage and see other women, including his long-standing mistress (who became Mrs. Gingrich No 3).
All of this was disclosed by Marianne, ex-wife No. 2, who claimed that her ex-husband lacked the ‘moral character’ to be president.
Newt’s also been slammed for his nearly $2 million in ‘consulting fees’ from Freddy Mac, one of the mortgage giants responsible for the wealth of toxic mortgages in the US, as well as the fortune he’s amassed by getting paid to ‘consult’ with lobbyists and help them play the political game.
Burden of expectation
Things are not much better on the Democratic side. When Obama was elected, the weight of expectation around him so impossibly high that he was given a Nobel Peace Prize before he’d actually done anything besides winning an election.
After his inauguration, he was universally expected to create a new New Deal a la Franklin Roosevelt, a bullish program of investment in green technologies and government works programs that would create jobs, fix America’s broken infrastructure, and set the country up for a greener future.
He would end the wars abroad and put a halt to the war-mongering of his predecessor, reaching out to the Muslim world. He would achieve universal health care, a goal that has eluded most Presidents since Harry Truman, and he would finally heal the divisions both between the parties and between Americans.
Whenever I think of Obama, I think of a variation of the line delivered by Sean Connery, who plays the seasoned Chicago cop, in The Untouchables: You don’t bring a knife to a gunfight.
Making nice
The problem with Obama is what I suspected when he was first running. He’s too inexperienced in the ways of the Washington swamp (he was, after all, only there as a junior congressman for two years before he ran for President), and he hides this inexperience by trying to make nice with the Republicans.
Instead of a bold new vision on the economy or re-instating the Depression-era Glass-Steagall Act, which separated casino from retail banking, Obama appoints as his chief financial advisors, two Wall Street cronies, both schooled by Goldman Sachs, who allow the financial sector to carry on essentially unfettered, and then cuts down his stimulus package in order to win Republican approval – which of course never arrives. Even his signature bill on healthcare reform got vastly compromised with porkbarrel additions by the time it was signed into law.
Although he has done some good through his first term (weakened Al Queda, health care reform, brought the boys home from Iraq, lowered unemployment, etc.,) the biggest problem is his public image. Obama will do anything to avoid a fight; when the Republicans refused to raise the debt ceiling, even though public opinion was with him, he caved. And at every turn, he continues to buckle out of some misguided idea that if he compromises or waffles on his position, peace will be restored. He vastly underestimates the giant resources at the disposal of his adversaries, such as Fox News, the mouthpiece of corporate America, almost daily pumping out a litany of his failures and allowing him to be painted as a Muslim commie foreigner.
Obama’s biggest mistake, for which he is losing liberal support, is not ignoring his adversaries and taking his fight to the public, who voted him in because they believed that he had some bold vision up his sleeve.
He has refused stand up for a new vision, as FDR did, who once said of his detractors, ‘I welcome their hatred.’
Saber-rattling
In the UK where I live, things aren’t much better. The coalition government of Conservative-Liberal Democratic coalition government announced yesterday the possibility that they would strip Sir Fred ‘the Shred’ Goodwin, former chief executive of Royal Bank of Scotland, of his knighthood, which he had received in 2004 for ‘services to banking.’
Under Sir Fred’s stewardship, RBS sustained the largest corporate loss in history, requiring a £45 billion government bailout. Even though taxpayers owned 84 per cent of RBS and have lost £26 billion on the much deflated current value of RBS stock, Sir Fred, you may recall, unapologetically paid himself a £700,000 pension (about $1.05 million) on leaving, and in late 2010, at least 100 RBS executives awarded themselves bonuses totalling £1 billion, despite the bank sustaining a loss of £1.1 billion that same year.
As symbolic as this removal of Fred’s ‘Sir’ may be, and for all the coalition government’s talk of fairness, moral capitalism and committees to assess executive pay packets, it remains largely saber-rattling. RBS is about to award its chief exec £4 million for last year and its top executives equally swollen paychecks when the public’s stocks are now worth half what we paid for them.
Recently, it was disclosed that giant Vodaphone’s tax debt of £6 billion has been entirely written off.
The spirit of leadership
Where are the leaders out there who refuse to be bought and paid for by lobbyists, but who are also bold enough to stand for fairness, morality and a new kind of societal structure? Who is brave enough to weather the corporate bully?
What’s required now is nothing less than a spiritual FDR, with an entirely new paradigm of ‘I win only when we all win’, unafraid to challenge and replace all the structures we have in place, even the very assumptions and thought processes on which our society is based.
Only then will we begin to fix what is now broken. Until we do, each of us must be the spiritual activist we don’t yet have in the White House.

You ask: Where are the leaders who refuse to be bought...etc., etc. Unfortunately, it would appear, not in politics.
Time after time, around the world, the evidence indicates that the people, when we finally unite and raise our voices, are the ones who "lead" the change. Power to the people!

Excellent piece, thank you! The leaders for our new age are here, and I am quite confident they will step forward at the right time. This is not yet it. We are on the edge of the calamities you name. Most people are unwilling to face that they are upon us. It won't be until after things have fully fallen apart that true leadership would be embraced enough to overcome the financial and political power of corporations.

I agree, it is the normal corrupt stuff. We do not see who really rules behind the scenes. Over here, I am sure those behind the WallStreet banks are pulling most of the strings. Just look at where ex Goldman Sachs execs end up after leaving. It is clear they are the government, not just here, but in a lot of other places. They do not allow honest people to compete. Just look at what they do to totally ignore Ron Paul.
Perhaps the prophets are right, this will be a year of transition where this greed and corruption is not allowed. No one knows how, but that really is not our job, is it? We do not have long to wait. Each has a Supermarket of possibilities to pick for the near future for our Universe. We are all choosing now. So be it.

What Lynne writes is excellent. Yet it is clear that Pres. Obama has no real power to do the things she has pointed out here. He is not simply making nice with adversarial forces, he could have no choice but to do so. His life or the lives of his family could be threatened.
I would say to Lynne, see the film "Thrive" by Foster & Kimberly Gamble. They lay it out very well where the power in the world really lies by following the money. And the information in their film parallels my own research since 1994 in trying to understand what happened to me in the military in 1980 and in what political, social and economic context it COULD happen.
In solving social, political and economic problems and using intention effectively in those arenas, one must first have a clear grasp of the true issues. Then one can hope to apply intention in a way where it can do the most good.

[wiki]I suggest that each of us check into our own subconscious beliefs about whether we have "clear intent for effective government." You can check yourself by using AK - muscle testing on the statement "I am willing to have effective government." Clear Intent at the Conscious Mind level is often "blocked" by competing beliefs at the Subconscious level. The body (through high-integrity muscle testing) can give you the Subconscious truth. To change that Subconscious truth requires "transformation." Transformation requires moving the stuck emotion that holds in the beliefs, and THEN changing the beliefs. In the meantime, we're left to COPE with the hardwired beliefs that say "I can't have what I say I want." [/wiki]
[wiki]I have "cleared" myself. It was surprising to me what stood in my own way. Now I find myself complaining less and doing more toward my new expectation of effective government -- and clearly believing it will "come true." This is co-creation at work./wiki]

I am glad I continued reading, it is so apparant yet many do not accept taking responsability for making peace and integrity within first, then in their own homes, then in their own communities and outward from there.
It is much easier to blame others for what we are not doing ourselves. When we choose fiscal responsability ourselves and peace ourselves we will see it in our world.

I much prefer your spititual insight rather than your political insight. First, your "facts" are directly from the mainstream media, and it is not possible to draw objective conclusions from biased data.
Secondly, most people who comment publically on politics have an agenda, and that agenda must be considered in all other communications. I hate to see a spiritual leader of your calibre 'rassling in the mud.

How one 'feels' and interacts with all of the 'outside' is the governing factor. We are indeed 'in' the playing 'Field'. Excitement reigns supreme. We are privileged, for we have all booked 'front row' seats as it were. We are all the 'surfers' and co-creators of life, catching waves, big & small. If he had his way he would end all environmental protections, all federal aid to the disadvantaged,c ancel the Civil Rights Act, end women's freedom to control their bodies, and toss the LGBT community to the wolves. He's supported by white supremacists. He wants to audit the Fed, but he doesn't want to regulate the big banks or anyone else. I am well aware of arguments against Ron Paul. But what is most important is restoring the full Constitution and system of checks and balances in government at this time. Ron Paul stands for Constitutional restoration. In such a restored government, a president would not be able to be a dictator or a tyrant. He would be subject to the system of checks and balances and the vote of the people. In the fascist regime we are headed for right now with other candidates, all the programs and "rights" you mention could be done away with and the people's voice would not matter one iota. Let's support a candidate who will restore the Constitution, then we can work on the rest of what serves us all best in a system of government for and by the people.

The credibility of my ideas stand on their own from years of documented research motivated by some pretty horrific personal experiences while in the USAF. You need not throw Somalia up to me. Atrocities are being committed right here on American soil, protected from oversight by the National Security Act of 1947 that created many alphabet agencies & a secret, unconstitutiona l govt within our govt. It's obvious that you have no idea at all just how far gone the USA is. To quibble about social programs when so much of what we hold dear as US citizens hangs by a thread shows a singular unrealistic grasp of what is truly going on in the USA. Though I support Ron Paul, I'm not convinced that anyone, no matter how good a person they might be could move into the Oval office today & have any hope of ironing out what's wrong with our gov't. But as long as we are having "elections" I support Ron Paul, unless another strong constitutional candidate steps forward.

Hardly. We worked hard for a society that was worthy of the United States and we're not going to throw that away just because you're scared of the black helicopters. My biggest objection to your position is that by supporting a fringe candidate you are giving up a vote for who will be our next President. In other words, you're making the one unforgivable activist mistake - you're being ineffective! But you'll feel good about it, and if one of the clown car Repugs wins, you'll say you did all you could.
Ask yourself - of the likely candidates (and Paul isn't likely), which is more likely to move the USA in the direction you want, even a little bit? For me, looking at Obama vs Romney/Gingrich, the answer is bold faced clear. Take your pick and support someone who might win so you can at least say that you had a vote.

Well said, Niara. Ron Paul has my vote. What people fail to realize is that in our country we do not look to government to solve our problems, we look to each other.
The larger that government becomes, the larger our problems become. It is so simple that people fail to see the simple Truth.
If people want real change, then there is one candidate who is willing to take on the leadership for that change.
Liberty, an open market providing goods and services that are of value to the people, a federal government stripped of its regulatory force co-opted by corporate interests and used to reinforce their monopolies and control economic markets, the restoration of family farms providing good, chemical free and nutritious food, the ending of the Big Pharma monopoly on health information, alternative modalities, the ending of our spreading military tyranny...the world, and our place in it will be quickly transformed into thriving.

Thank you CC. I think Ron Paul has far more support than the media would lead us to believe. Last election I did the "don't throw my vote away" thing and voted for Obama, with a cautious optimism. We all see where that got us. As far as working with intention, we know that working as a group or collective is more powerful than individually. We are not a whole lot of little individual units of consciousness on Planet Earth, we are all in this together, interconnected. What affects one of us affects all of us at a deep level, whether we are aware of it or not. Just as we have to individually do our shadow work to reach enlightenment, we as a human collective also have to collectively do our shadow work and face into and through the dark back out into brilliant and unfettered Light. De Chardin's noosphere, Jung's collective unconscious, both models are guides to understanding our inescapable unity. (See next comment..)

The things going on in government today & the general narcissism that's blaringly evident in politics & the media is humanity's collective shadow up for healing & integration. Just as we must do our shadow work individually, we also need to do it collectively. Our consciousness is divided up into superconscious, conscious & subconscious, individually and collectively. Need-to-know compartmentaliz ation & security classifications that have created this monster from our collective "Id" needs to be understood as such & when we do understand that, we can use intention in a powerful way to integrate that collective shadow & truly make positive change on Earth. As long as we see the evil elements of our society as evil "others" we struggle with our collective Id. The way out is to accept responsibility for the creation of what we see around us at a most fundamental, interconnected & quantum entangled level. Then true CHANGE becomes possible & We the People are empowered to make it happen.

I don't know where you are getting your information regarding Ron Paul. It's totally inaccurate. You have to really listen to what he's saying in order to understand that he's for equality across the board (gays and minorities included).
Ron Paul on Gays in the Military: "We get our rights from our creator as individuals. Every individual should be treated the same way. It isn't the issue of homosexuality. It's the concept and understanding of individual rights." ~ Ron Paul youtu.be/uJnRkUJjazU
Everyone is equal regardless of whatever 'group' they choose to categorize themselves into. Labeling oneself is just another form of playing victim. It's the individual that matters - NOT the person's label (in this case sexuality)! Rock on Ron! You explained this beautifully!!!

Lynne: Obama was the junior Senator from Illinois, not a Congressman (Representative ). His positives greatly outweigh his negatives, in spite of the literally selfish obstructionism of the Republicans. He was a great candidate, then a learner President for a couple of years. Now he has found his stable position on the level of statesmanship. That position he now articulates forcefully from the basis of the people's interest. Only his financial advisors are questionable, but where does one find a Wall Street banker with both expertise and clean skirts? In truth Obama is in a league far above the GOP/TP hopefuls trying to compete with him for the presidency. That is a simple statement of fact.

There is only one presidential hopeful out there in the US who appears ready to challenge the structures run by the global elite.
Ron Paul has consistently stood up against the Federal Reserve, Big Banks, Corporations and atrocities like the Patriot Act.
Ron Paul appears to be strongly committed to serving the people by reducing the Federal Government, eliminating expensive wars and helping the people regain their independence (self sufficient)and freedoms.
Ron Paul's momentum has been steadily growing along with his number of supporters (becoming the majority) who understand that the paradigm we currently have in government needs to change.

Intention works best when your conscious intent (choice) is not wrestling with subconscious, instinctive reactions. To be more powerful we can find and transform our own beliefs and attitudes that go against our choices.
Transformation requires more than affirmations. We must dig into emotions that hold the old attitudes in place -- so we can truly CLEAR our Intent.
How to do that? Set your intent for healing ... then MOVE the emotions of "not getting what I say I want" until your inner truths start emerging, e.g., "I can't depend on a man ..."
When you see and OWN that these unloving truths are yours ... and that they are "creating your reality," then you can CHANGE those truths. Rewire with new, loving beliefs: "I'm willing to have men come into my life that I trust. I'm willing to have men in my life who are responsible. I'm willing to be responsible for myself, etc."
Empower yourself. We are the new leaders.

I agree with Chatham Forbes that Obama is the right man for our times. He is of our emerging paradigm, where power comes from within -- not through “control over.”
Obama is having to navigate between the two paradigms. We are in the cauldron of change - and it is boiling hot.
I feel that to support him will best support our country and our world as we shift into new consciousness.

We need leaders with different political belief, who are willing to collaborate with one another and not try to eliminate the opponent. When Obama had a favorable Congress in the first 2 years, he showed no interest in collaborating,u ntil he lost the house. Whether Ron Paul has good ideas or not, I question whether he's really interested in collaboration. Gingrich, while a Conservative, has a track record of working with the Liberals on various social and budget reforms. My vote is for him.

What a lively conversation! Yet the same thing keeps being made clear to me. In the majority of responses, someone is trying to argue their point of view AGAINST the point of view of someone else. There is an underlying agenda of persuasion for an imagined reader and attempt to justify a position.
Please review the true effects of intention. Anything you resist will persist. Arrange your personal emotional temperature to APPROVAL of all you are experiencing. If you cannot accept what is, you cannot release it's hold on your consciousness and it's control over you. Remember that YOU are the only one who can change the world. What do you want to see?
